West Penn Power's environmental efforts
West Penn Power, through its parent company, FirstEnergy, has spent more than $10 billion on eco-friendly efforts to clean up their act since the 1970 Clean Air Act. Along with that, this utility is looking into adding more renewable energy to the grid and is one of the largest providers of wind energy in the region. Most notably, all FirstEnergy utilities participate in the biggest recycling project in North America – FirstEnergy's Bruce Mansfield Recycling Plant in Shippingport, PA. This recycling facility takes the byproduct of the utility scrubber systems and recycles it into Gypsum, a material that creates drywall.
West Penn Power and electric rates in New Brighton
Since West Penn Power in New Brighton is a utility, it offers default energy service at regulated supply rates. However, consumers who live in its service area do not have to purchase their energy supply directly from the utility anymore. After deregulation in Pennsylvania, consumers are now able to purchase supply from alternative suppliers that offer plans in their area. These plans come in a handful of forms.
- Stable-rate plans involve a set rate per kWh for the length of a contract. These supply rates offer price protection against the energy market's changes and are sometimes offered for multiple year terms.
- Variable-rate plans allow consumers to pay a supply rate that follows the market price of the energy. Variable supply rates enable consumers to take advantage of market lows with the tradeoff of market highs during periods of high demand.
